    What Is Sales Growth?

Sales growth is the percentage change in revenue from one period to the next. The sales growth formula is current period revenue minus previous period revenue, divided by previous period revenue, multiplied by 100. A positive result means you are growing.

Revenue alone tells you how big you are. Sales growth tells you whether you are speeding up or slowing down, and how far you are from your target.

How to Use the Sales Growth Calculator

Three steps and about a minute.

    1

    Pull two figures

Take revenue for two periods of the same length, such as this year and last year.

    2

    Set them in the calculator

Drag the sliders to your figures. Growth rate and monthly average recalculate as you go.

    3

    Plan your next target

Unlock the target planner to see the gap to your goal and the monthly growth you need to close it.

How to Calculate Sales Growth: The Four Inputs

Most wrong answers come from comparing two periods that do not match.

    1. Previous period revenueRevenue recognised in the earlier period. Use the same definition of revenue you use for the current period.
    2. Current period revenueRevenue for the latest complete period. Leave out a month that has not finished yet.
    3. Months in periodThe length of each period in months. Both periods must be the same length.
    4. Growth targetThe growth rate you are aiming for. Base it on your plan, not on a single strong month.

    A Sales Growth Example

A team made $500,000 last year and $600,000 this year. That is $100,000 of new revenue, divided by $500,000, which gives 20% sales growth, or about 1.5% a month.

To reach $750,000 next year, the same team needs 25% growth. That means lifting monthly growth from about 1.5% to about 1.9%, every month. Small monthly gaps compound over a year.

    Where Sales Growth Comes From

Growth comes from four places. Some take a quarter or more to move, others your sales team controls today.

    Slower to move

    New customers

Needs more pipeline, which usually means more marketing spend or more reps, and takes time to show up.

    Slower to move

    Higher prices

Means repackaging or repricing your offer, which takes careful testing.

    Sales controls it

    Bigger deals

Shaped by how well your proposal shows value and offers a clear upgrade path.

    Sales controls it

    Faster closes

Deals that close this quarter instead of next count towards this period's growth. That is why sales teams start here.

    How to Grow Sales Faster

Growth is rarely limited by demand alone. More often, deals slow down between the call and the signature.

    1

Follow every good call with a document

Interest fades fast after a strong meeting. A ready library of services, pricing and proof makes same-day sending easy.

    2

Make the upgrade easy to say yes to

Offer two or three pricing options. Buyers often choose the middle one when it is clear value.

    3

Keep existing clients growing with you

Renewals and upsells are often the cheapest growth you have. Find them with these steps to conducting a sales analysis.

How to Hit Your Growth Target

A target is easier to hit when you know which deals will get you there.

    Work back from the number

Divide the revenue gap by your average deal value. That tells you how many extra deals you need, and how many proposals.

Time your follow-up to their reading

A follow-up sent while a buyer is reading lands far better. Learn how to follow up on a sales proposal.

    Track growth every month

Check your growth rate monthly. A slow month spotted early is easier to recover than a slow quarter.

    Common Sales Growth Mistakes

Five habits that make growth look better or worse.

    Mistake
    Fix
    Comparing periods of different length
Use two periods the same length
    Including a month in progress
    Only use complete periods
    Mixing bookings with collected revenue
Pick one definition and keep it
    Ignoring seasonal peaks and dips
    Compare against last year's season
    Judging growth on one month
    Look at three month trends

Faster closes mean faster growth. Try these strategies to shorten the B2B sales cycle.

    Faster Documents, Faster Growth

When the sales growth calculator shows a gap between your growth and your target, look at what slows deals down. Proposals often sit for days while someone drafts, formats and chases them. Proposal.biz cuts that waiting out of every deal.

    • Branded documents from one promptAdd your website once and Proposal.biz learns your services and prices. Each new proposal or deck then starts from a short prompt.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers about using the sales growth calculator

Sales growth equals current period revenue minus previous period revenue, divided by previous period revenue, then multiplied by 100. The result is your growth rate as a percentage.
It depends on your size, market and stage. Younger companies often grow faster from a smaller base. Compare your own rate over time, and against the target in your plan.
Use the same formula with two consecutive months, or let the calculator work out the monthly average for you.
They are often used the same way. Some teams count only sales revenue, leaving out one-off fees and other income.
Revenue fell compared with the previous period. Check whether it was fewer deals, smaller deals or lost customers before deciding what to fix.
Monthly suits most B2B teams, with a fuller review each quarter and year. Seasonal businesses should compare each month with the same month last year, not the month before.
